AIR: Vampire Cowboys

Julie 1695

Julie 1695 is a new Vampire Cowboys play written by Artistic Director Qui Nguyen, directed by Artistic Director Robert Ross Parker, and commissioned by the Geffen Playhouse. Filled with action and told through Vampire Cowboys’ signature geek theater aesthetic, Julie 1695 follows the real life exploits of Julie d’Aubigny, a 17th Century opera singer and duelist as she fights her romantic rivals, duels her way through France burning convents in her wake, and finds love. In their typical genre-bending style, this new work will include music, puppetry, and stage combat to tell Julie’s story in the voice of 70’s grindhouse, grand guignol, and burlesque.

Vampire Cowboys is an OBIE Award winning theater company whose work is rooted in martial-arts infused stage combat, comic books, and traditional theatrical forms such as mask, puppetry, and music. Helmed by Artistic Directors Qui Nguyen and Robert Ross Parker, Vampire Cowboys became “the best known geek theater company in America” (American Theatre) and was named NYC’s “Best Army of Geeks” by the Village Voice. Their new works for the stage include: Soul Samurai, Fight Girl Battle World, Alice in Slasherland, and The Inexplicable Redemption of Agent G. Their plays have been nominated for GLAAD Media Awards, received numerous NY Innovative Theater Awards, and in 2006 the company was awarded the Caffe Cino Fellowship. Their genre-bending creations aim to bridge the gap between mainstream media and live performance, and are soaked in the cultural bloodstream of the now.
